News & Updates

It looks like the weather and the flows for the weekend should be perfect. We expect to see wading opportunity on both the Holston and Clinch Rivers. A split schedule on the Clinch will accommodate those wanting to wade or float. It looks like the Holston will not be generating through the weekend, and this will allow for both the boating and wading angler to fish the Holston at its best.

We have been seeing good caddis hatches mid-day and late in the evening on the Holston River below Cherokee Dam. Sulphurs have been mixed in as well, but the fish seem to be more focused on the Caddis if you are fishing dries. We have had a lot of success on Hot Creek Caddis and Henryville Specials in sizes #16 and #18. For nymphs, larger pheasant tails in sizes #14 and #16 will work well. If you are planning to head out to the clinch, I would have plenty of Sulphur nymphs and BH PTs. Mix in a few yellow soft hackles to fish in the riffles and runs, and have some comparaduns ready if you see a hatch later in the afternoon. Per usual, fish will likely take midges as well, and I’d recommend black and olive in smaller sizes.

The GSMNP is fishing great along with the tailwaters. Flows in the park look fair, and with the sunny afternoons we have had lately, I would expect significant hatches. It would be smart to have plenty of yellow nymphs and dry flies such as Neversink Caddis and Tellicos. Keep your fly selections simple, and focus more on your presentations and stealthy wading. Stay on the bank as much as you can while fishing pockets and current seams.

Jeremy got out the other day and found a bunch of White Bass around the Pellissippi Bridge. Other anglers have been getting on them around the forks of the river near Ijams, and also at the 61 bridge on the Clinch. Jon Oody has been finding a bunch of Hybrids lately that are big and ready to put a good bend in an 8wt. If you want to get on the striped fish give him a call at 865-363-8180.

Whatever you decide to chase this weekend, be safe and mindful of others enjoying the water. Give us a call of swing by the shop if we can help you in any way. 865-200-5271
